Hi All

Here's an 1840 Half Dime worn very thin. My grandfather wrote only that it is "too good to throw away", but I wonder if it's too worn to be of any value other than sentimental!

Thanks for your help!

It's an 1840 no drapery Half Dime which I'd grade FR-2 or Fair-2. I'd estimate it has a value of $3 to $10

its not the monetary value of that coin and where for you it holds wonderful family memories for others not familiar it's the historic value. I bet if you walked up to 100 random people who did not collect coins and said:

"Hey, hold this for minute. Now think about the past 184 years in our country. How many families did this dime feed in its travels? How many jubilant children were smiling ear to ear as they dropped it in their piggy banks over the course of time?"

I'd imagine more than a few dozen would spend a minute enjoying the beauty that lies within the thoughts that those types of scenarios might bring even if only for a fleeting moment. That's the value in a coin like that.

Great type coin too btw. thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your comments! I think you're right about the history - I also wonder at the coin's journey over its long lifetime and how it might have ended up in my grandfather's hands. I'm pretty sure he wasn't buying coins, but simply collecting interesting coins which crossed his path, and a hundred years or more after 1840!
