What do people think of the authenticity of this Lysimachos tetradrachm? I ask, not because I doubt the authenticity at all, but because I know there are so many fakes of this type out there and I would be grateful if the more experienced member's here could give it the once over for me.

Incidentally, for a perusal of the fakes recently sold, do a search for sold items of this type on ebay. Unless the fraudsters are buying all their own items, it is amazing what people will pay good money for. I would say at least half are fakes.

Not an expert but I don't see anything wrong with it. Nice looking coin.

Maybe it's how you took the picture, the surface looks a little grainy.

Thanks to you both for commenting. I hope others will chip in too. Yes, Medieval, the surfaces do look a little grainy but not in a way that tells me, at least, whether this is a concern or not. It is not the best preserved specimen, quite aside from wear, and there are signs of a somewhat scratchy cleaning (though I have seen worse). I am not sure whether you usually see a little copper leeching in these coins too, but I certainly have other Greek silvers with this kind of graininess as a result of that. Do you think it is of concern then?

The colour is very light (but that can be due to the light as well) potentially due to the cleaning agent used. Would definitely look at the rim for any unusual signs but otherwise would not discount it, there are no definite tell-tale signs from the pictures. How does it feel to you based on the size and weight?

I haven't bought it yet, Medieval. Still thinking about it. It is up for £80, which these days is about $130. He doesn't give edge pics or a weight, but his coins are generally reliable. I could always ask him for them of course...or I could hope for a better deal if I don't make a fuss and return it if necessary. I am in the early stages of consideration...

Have you compared it with his other one?

You could do with FR on this one. Looking at the listing and the high magnification there are things that make me uneasy. Might be pearls but on the other hand might be dust.

Yes I have PishPash....which is a little disconcerting. To me this one looks the better, but has a lower starting price. The second one actually looks more worrying to me. The problem is I am very inexperienced with this type so cannot trust my own judgement. I would love to pick one up, but being confined by budget must rely on a bargain. Hence the reason I am seeking other's opinions. What did you think, upon looking at them both?

Btw...naturally I would not want to dispel the secrecy and name the seller for everyone to know...both for the sake of the dealer, but also in the hope that I won't invite everyone to bid against me!

I am not sure I know who FR is, PishPash. Is there any way of drawing his/her attention to this thread?

Was not that difficult to find

It's not a 'Super Tetradrachm' and the 80 Pounds is just the starting bid.

Looking at the magnification, all I can say is that I would not buy it - not attractive enough to spend a lot of money on (regardless if authentic or not). Methinks it wouldn't match your other silver coins either - thinks about it, you have more than 4 days left.

You know....you are probably right. It might look a bit tatty against my others. Usually I restrict myself to more modest types in better condition. Thanks PishPash! That simple wise observation helped me make up my mind! It has also removed my disquiet over the potential risk.....which is good!
