I believe this is an As of the emperor Claudius, The obverse has been tooled and the coin edges are chipped and worn.

Quote:
what is 'tooled'

In general it is any artificial modification of the coin surface. But one distinguishes three different types of 'tooling':
1. inadvertent changes to the surface during cleaning (with a hard object)
2. intended changes to 'improve' the grade of a coin (eg flattening out rough spots)
3. modification of the coin to create another type
The first is normally excusable as part of conservation, the second is to a degree understandable but can be criminal, the third is definitely criminal with the intention to create a forgery.

Mostly it is an easily noticeable change which lets people emphasise that a coin has been 'tooled', ie types 2 and 3.

So is that in antiquity or more recent ? As I dug this up yesterday from my Roman site and doubt it's been touched by another person since it was dropped ?
