So why is this Heraclius so expensive? Bidding is nuts on this coin.



Heraclius, with Heraclius Constantine. 610-641. AV Solidus (21mm, 4.45 g, 6h). Constantinople mint, 5th officina. Struck circa 613-616. Crowned facing busts of Heraclius and Heraclius Constantine; cross above / Cross potent set on three steps; N to right; Є//CONOB. DOC â€"; MIB 13; SB 741B. EF, obverse die rust, flan flaw or slight die clash on reverse.

No picture? What is the current price? Being a solidus it's not going to be cheap to start with. This is a little rare than the others because it was only produced in one Officina.

I think it is a one of a kind or very unique, as most 741 coins go for $500

It is a rare type in super condition. It might go as high as $1500 but I think any higher than that would be too much. Lately the price of Byzantine coins has been going up. That might explain it also.

I could find nothing on 741b coins, so I dropped an e-mail to David Sear asking him about this coin in particular.

I asked David Sear and he pegged it as a 736 not a 741.

"I would say that this piece is rather Sear 736 as the emperors are depicted with elaborate crowns. These variant forms with letters in the reverse field are generally much scarcer than the main issues."

SB 736 isn't as rare as SB 741b, but in this condition it's still going to be a high priced coin.
