I really wanted to win the Macrinus dupondius ...... But apparently so did quite a few other people. The pics were poor and my pockets were already picked ! So I ended up with poor old Claudius instead Claudius Orichalcum Dupondius Obv. Bust of Claudius left TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP Rv. CERES AVGVSTA Ceres veiled and draped, seated left on ornamental throne, holding two corn-ears & long torch, S C in ex. (looks more like a long pipe wrench & blow torch !) 12.03 grams 26-7mm Sear 1855 RIC 94 Dark Olive Green Patina

Nice coin. Do you think the reverse has been tooled?

Unusually high relief on the reverse. Early dupondii tend toward the flat ! But the patina seems genuine and the minor pitting shows orange beneath. I believe the surfaces to be 'unmolested' !

Really lovely looking coin. I would just give one piece of advice. I acquired a coin with very similar looking pitting a few months ago, which recently has started showing serious signs of bronze disease. As it happens it too is a Claudius AE. I am now trying to halt the process with a sesquis-sodium bicarbonate soak. Yours will probably be fine, but I would just keep an eye on it.

I agree the pits appear likely scars from BD. The Macrinus I was after had several small spots of 'neon' green showing. It made me reluctant to bid higher than my usual modest amount. It sold for 190 euros ! This one was passed over in the rush and came in well under my expectation. Early dupondii tend to fetch impressive results in reasonable condition. Someday I will find a Macrinus imperial. But not today

I agree with Valecrucis and have taken to empirically/preemptively treating any of my bronze coins with chippy patinas or the slightest sign of bronze disease. I use the sodium sesquicarbonate recipe found on Forvm. After rinsing and drying, I apply VerdiCare.

TIF, I haven't used Verdicare. A quick search on ebay in the UK drew a blank. I wonder if I can get it here? Is it really very good stuff? If so, I will get it sent from the U.S.

Watch the postage. I got a couple of bottles, I couldn't find it anywhere except from wizardcinsupply.com. You might want to drop the inventor a line. He is a CCF member, I think his name is BadThad.

Sorry about that PishPash! I guess I should put 'away with the fairies' below my avatar to make my own position clear. I'm in not at all sunny N.Wales ;). Nice to be getting to know you!

a really pretty coin FR, blemishes and all. color is great and the details are wonderful. I thought the same thing about BD when I saw the erosions in the patina, keep it on the "frequently checked" list.'
I've been using verdicare as of late and have been pleased with the results. maybe next week or so i'll try to post some pics.
