Hi All! First time posting, new to this forum and coin collecting, I'm hooked! I hope this is the right section to post this, if not, my apologies to the admin. I recently purchased a 10oz silver coin from a flea market, that I absolutely fell in love with, just trying to get information on it... It has Lady Liberty 1985 on front and the words Liberty in different languages with her torch in the center. Around the coin it has Johnson Matthey mark, MTB, .999 10 Ounces, 1985 and Liberty Trade Silver. Any information would be greatly appreciated! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

First off: Please head over to intorductions and tell us a bit about yourself. Concerning the round, I am not familiar with the 10 oz version. However the reverse seems off compared to the 1 oz and 5oz versions of which there are at least 2 http://www.apmex.com/product/62360/...iberty-tradeThere is also an Englehard 1oz version same reverse as link. The MTB stands for Manfra Tordella & Brookes who hired JM, Englehard, and Mexico mint to mint the rounds. There is a 5 oz round made by the Mexico Mint and carries a OM mark and 1987 date with same reverse as 1 oz. I can find no record of the 10 oz version, meaning it is either very rare or counterfeit. I would have it tested.

Thank You, Silver Handle for getting back to me regarding the coin. I too, have had problems trying to find the coin in 10oz, then I saw this http://www.ebay.com/itm/331293833223and it was the exact one I have, but in a 1oz version... I guess the plot thickens now :) I will have it tested though. Thank you once again for the information and your help, it is much appreciated!

If you have a powerful magnet, you can see if it reacts. Those ceramic refrigerator magnets won't cut it, though. A neodymium one is what you're after. If you don't mind saying, how much were you charged? A real one would probably cost $180-220.

Your welcome on the info. I wish you the best of luck, however ebay auctions are in no way proof of authenticity. I agree with the magnet test. Should it turn out to be rare, then nice score, provided you paid near spot.

I paid $220 at a flea market in Connecticut, I just thought it was a beautiful piece, when I researched it, I only saw 1oz rounds from Englehard, front was similar, back was totally different, thought maybe I got duped, then I saw the one on ebay, with the same front and back, I thought either we both got a fake or something on the rare side. Wish I could find more about it, never going to sell it, Lady Liberty is too pretty for that :) oh, number was 0408... Thank you fine Sir's/Ladies for the info! Will an acid test ruin the coin? I'm kind of new to collecting and have notices the round acid mark on some coins I have recently purchased?

Yes an acid test would ruin the coin, and would not be able to determine whether it was only plated unless you filed it first(which is more damaging). Seeing the serial number for the first time could be very good clue, so much to say that if you find another and the same serial number is on it, then you know its fake. While if they differ then probably genuine rare.
Do you have a spare hard drive? You can get rare earths magnets out of it. Those will tell you if its at least silver. Should it turn out to be genuine, then bear in mind, this is a rare bullion round, not a coin. Probably only considered semi-numismatic among bullion collectors, but JM does have a following.

Hi Silver Handle! I gave the bullion to a close friend this past hour, who will bring it to his guy to have it tested (non-acid test) I should find out by Thursday evening what the results are... Before I let it go, I noticed this mark on the front of the coin, can you, or anyone identify it? If anyone would be so kind as to recommend a Neo Magnet to buy, It would be most appreciated, so many different ones, not sure which one to get?

Thank you Silver Handle..... Well the bullion is a real 10 Troy ounce piece of silver, now to figure out why there is not a lot of information about it.... If anyone knows anything about this coin, I would love to hear from you! Lot's of info on the Englehard version, but not this one from JM... :(
