Let me thank you in advance for reading through this post.
It's long, containing some emails, but your opinion will be welcome.

I enjoy this forum and find members advice extremely helpful.
So, I’m asking for some advice and opinions on the following emails.
Since joining the forum I have found the forum a safe place to swap coins with members and been very happy with the results.

I have posted a world coin want list with about a hundred countries coins that are hard to find.
https://goccf.com/t/1832
Please have a look at the want list.

Hi Mihai,
You have one coin from ALL those countries listed! That's amazing. At the moment I don't have a double list ready of trade coins but I could pay you via Paypal.
Could you send me a list what coins you have from each country, KM #, and how much you'd like for it?
example: Curacao, 1/10 Gulden, 1901, KM#36, Very Fine $20.
Regards Robert”

Email #2……1st August
Hi there!
Yes.
I am sorry but I don't have KM,Krause catalogue but I have read your list and I have pretty much all the coins u need. The grades are VF-UNC.
Listen,u make me an offer(what u think u can pay for all the coins). To answer to you for the Curacao,1/10 gulden,1901,i ask $10.
One more thing: in the country I live in there is no Paypal service. But,i have received payments this way: cash in registered mail letter.U can send that way?
Mihai

Hello again Mihai,
Gee whiz it is a little hard for me to put a price on the coins as I don't
know which denomination and condition each one is. Could you provide me
with a picture of them? If not, since you have the coins there, What do
you think they are worth? What would be a fair price?
No Paypal? What country do you live in?
Have you been colecting coins for a long time or are you a very young
collector?
I've been trying to get some of these coins for a long time, your very lucky
to have such a good collection of coins.
I'll need your address to send the money also.
Thanks again,
Robert

Email #3……2nd AugustHi,
I live in Romania.
I have been collecting coins for 12 years now and I do have many many coins in my collection from all over the world.A fair price?Hmmmmm....i don't know...i don't have the exact price in my mind...Will $100-$150 be ok? Let me know at what price/amount of money u are thinking as well. And,do use Registered Mail(not just regular air mail) in sending the cash.
My address is:
XXXXXXXXXXXX (Edited for privacy reasons)
Thanks,
Mihai

Email #4……4rd August
I have replied to that e-mail in wich you were asking my my address.I did sent my reply and I gave you my address.Got it?
Mihai

My Reply to 3 & 4…..August 4rd
Yes, sorry, I've had a very busy day.
Can you send me a scan or picture of the coins

Email #5……August 5th
I don't have access to a scanner.
As I said to you the coins are in grades from VF to UNC.

My Reply to Email #5…..August 5th
Hi Mihai,
Oh, no scanner. Hummm, That does make it hard to value the collection. I will see if I can get some advice from some forum members on what the value of the coins might be. I would not want to under pay you as some of these countries coins are not cheap. It would help if I knew which countries and denominations the coins are, with which grade. There is a big difference between $100 and $150.
Are you sure sending cash is safe? Would a cheque or bank transfer be better?
Regards Robert (toast)

So, what does everyone think? I’m after the experianced advice of fellow forum members.

Well to me I look at it as a job interview of which I did enough
How and where did he get the coins over that 12 year period
What did he pay for them ?
Why does he want to sell them ?
What is his asking price ?
He must know somebody with a digital camera of scanner and failing that he could send a good old fashioned paper foto of the coins
Given the country of origin I would rate this as a high risk
So with the high risk I would only offer ten cents on the dollar and
start with a low dollar "trial" parcel knowing that this first parcel probably would contain the best coins to make a good impression
These are the ideas of a cynical Belgian

I see a few things that would scare me away. First, NEVER - EVER send cash.
Without detailed information on each coin (grade-price) there is NO way to put an accurate value. Just sending a lump sum for a pile of coins is a sure way to loose money.

It is kind of like those large lots you see on ebay. You just have no idea of what is in it until it is all unpacked and too late to recover your money.

If it were me, I would rather miss a good deal than to purchase a bad one.

I would feel better about this if you were being provided with at least a list of the denominations and conditions. I would recommend skipping this one.

Hello Toast,
Sending cash is not good at all. These emails sounds very familiar to the experiance my friend had. He purchased a navigation system on ebay but the seller said he's in ROMANIA and he can't take paypal and we should send money via Western Union. My friend wired $600 and never heard from him since then.!!

I have not traded with Mihai.
But I did send him some State Quarters as a gift a couple of months ago. I got follow up e-mails asking if I wanted some Romainian coins sent back in exchange. I declined. I have traded with people in Romainia before and have sent money but never large amounts. Sometimes I have had very good results. But for the most part I think your name says it all.

One other thing: I am a little concerned that one of our members wants to sell (and once money is involved, it's no longer a trade) without fulfilling the 50-post requirement. This rule was put in place so that no one would be dealing with an unknown in transactions. The fact that this member does not post, asks for cash, and will not supply a detailed list of the coins and their conditions is a huge red flag to me.

Hi Toast

1000 coins for 100 to 150.00 thats an amazing deal !!!!! no photo's no shipping amount ? just a little too amazing in my opinion !!!

If you want to give it a try tell the guy that you put the funds in an escrow account, when you get the coins the escrow will send the money .

otherwise no deal !!

Toast? do you want to get burned!?!

I smell it already, I collect for over 20 years and don't have all you wanted, altrough I collect world by type and year and buy every year abouth 100 kilo's of bulk, and on auctions even small type collections, with a diverce of country's.........

Your choice, but in your place I will use my hard earned cash for a good bottle, instead a "dark" shipment with empty promises.

Greetings, Carl

I wanted to provide some very important information for our members regarding the member (Coinlover29) who is attempting to make this sale to toast.

For many reasons, I believe this to be the same individual who took advantage of many members on the Coin People forum site. The first name is identical, the username is similar, the location also matches. This member has chosen not to post to our forum, only to attempt to make sales. In my opinion, this is the sign of a troll and we need to avoid buy/sell/trade transactions with this member.

While it saddens me that one of our members would be dishonest, I am glad that I have the opportunity to reveal the situation to all of you and hope that you take the proper steps to protect yourself.

Thank you, Toast, for posting this thread. This is what enabled me to get to the bottom of this situation.
