It all started with Genghis Khan (some of his adventures were well described in the recent topic by 'Ancientnoob') but it affected not only Asia but the eastern parts of Europe as well:

More-On-Mongols

An excellent summary of the history of Mongolian invasions, the genealogy of the various families and the sequence of rulers can be found at http://www.friesian.com/mongol.htm#map-1

Hope this will tempt some on this forum to chase coins of the various regions/Khanates, don't forget that many of those eventuated during the period of the later crusades.

Here an odd coin I was finally able to attribute (picked it up many years ago as a curiosity, wondering what it was):

More-On-Mongols More-On-Mongols

anonymous AR Dirhem of the House of Batu (~1280-1300)

Obverse: Tamgha of the House of Batu
Reverse: Ornamental Design

Reference: See Numbers 16 to 26 in http://www.podgorski.com/library/Ta...H.htm#_ftn24 and the associated analysis (first part).

This is an area that I haven't gotten into yet but have a strong interest in finding more about. I would love to find one of these coins I can afford.

The coins of Golden Horde etc are not really that expensive. One site which offers quite a few of those: http://www.numismall.com/acc/Golden...481-c-11459/ (*)

And for identification purposes there is also: http://www.mongoliancoins.com/coins...denHorde=105
(not only the Golden Horde but plenty other Mongol coins as well)

(*) Postscript: Once I have tidied up my collection, I would like to add one of those bilingual ones, eg bottom one on the first page of that link.

What about a coin from Toktamysh? In the end you definitely need both of those rulers.

Does anyone know the history of, let's say, the fifty years prior to Genghis Khan amongst the Mongols? Crazed notions of world domination rarely come out of the blue. Thinking of Nazi Germany...you have the disastrous treaty of Versailles previously. There is at the very least usually a build up period. Is there any analysis in the case of the Mongols? Their sudden explosion upon the world scene was especially brutal. No matter how much of it was down to the one man, Genghis Khan, I wonder what the cultural cause was?

For a quick and dirty write-up see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Mongolia
Basically the Mongols quite often ventured on empire building and/or civil war.

But let me disagree on the "especially" qualifier for "brutal". Yes they were brutal but not more than many of their contemporaries. History is often re-written to suit the writer (or whom it is written for). The pages of history are littered with brutal behaviour and emphasis on the brutality of the enemy or vanquished suits the agenda of those in power.
Was the genocide committed by the Jewish tribes described in the Bible especially brutal? How about Persians against the Greeks? How about Alexander the Great? And what about the Romans? Jumping forward, what about the deeds of Charlemagne especially his treatment of the Saxon tribes? The Crusaders were not gentle in their behaviour either, they were worse than their Muslim adversaries - but what do history schoolbooks tell us? Drifting off the time-frame of this forum: what about the colonial powers (eg go and ask an Indian about the British deeds in India)?

Jumping back to your question. Yes, the right preconditions have to be there. An effective army/force has to be there to be utilised by a strong leader with imperial ambitions. Don't forget that the storm of the Mongols was not without precedent, just look at Alexander the Great or another force to come from the steppes in Asia earlier, namely the Huns.

Need a topic dealing with some other Mongol tribes?
Or is there any other area where you wish to be tempted?

Not into these but interesting coin.

You and Anoob seem to have similar collecting passions. I think you two might be long-lost brothers
