Is this Julian, tooled, or manipulated in any way since it seems so pristine. If not, how does one look for obvious signs of tooling? Examples?

Doesn't look tooled to me. The condition is excellent, one of the nicest I've seen. Quite valuable.

That's definitely one for the bearded guy thread... didn't even know there were any non-Johannes bearded emperors that late in Roman history.

Well, I for one would view this as highly suspicious as too good to be true. If it was found on ebay, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. However, if it was from a reputable dealer my credit card would be a blur. If it is real, it is absolutely gorgeous.

January, there's also Eugenius (a rare usurper) and I think there might be another but I'm probably wrong.

There are at least half a dozen high grade Julian II bull coins on ebay. I didn't see this one there. I checked the fake reports and I didn't find this there, not to say it just hasn't been added yet. I think this one is OK but as good as the the forgers have gotten it's really difficult to say without an expert opinion.

Not tooled, but have to agree with the comments from 'pishpash' and 'echizento'.

I do not think that this coin has been tooled.
I think that I DO see some minor signs of encrustation having been removed around the letters 'SRE' by mechanical means of a hand held scraper of some sort or other.
Nevertheless, I would NOT regard what I see here as 'tooling' of the coin, in a spurious attempt to improve it.
