I've said in this forum that I would buy a bust half that was cleaned if it was 'acceptable' to me. So many of the bust halfs have been cleaned, but not harshly. I bought this one AU Details in an NGC slab. It looks great in hand but these magnified photos are a bit concerning. I'm not sure if I like it as it seems a bit more cleaned than I expected.

Let me know what you think about the grade and the cleaning.

Hopefully somebody with a lot of experience in the series can jump in. I've had a few Capped Bust Halves, but I don't remember any of them looking quite like this one. There's something ... I dunno.

Clearly dipped and the hairlines came from something scrubbing. As for grade... looks somewhere in the VF range but, to me cipster, this coin does not look real. I'm afraid to say... Sorry!

Let's hope for some other opinions from those with more experience than me!

Did you verify the slabs authenticity? Gosh, I hope I'm wrong.

It barely makes the AU Details NGC said it had. I'd call it XF Details - Improperly Cleaned. I've seen a lot worse cleanings but it's still lost all its original patina at some point in the past.

I suppose it could just be a really weak strike and that's how they get AU. That would also explain the lack of dimension in the sculpture on both sides. It just looks flat. But I guess what I haven't seen like this before that's throwing me off is the sharpness in the outlines of the feathers. But ... yeah, I guess it could go AU because of the stars and strike luster in protected areas, but the weak strike and overall flatness is really throwing me off. Sorry if I incorrectly alarmed ya!

I would say AU53 details. Not too harshly cleaned.

AU details.

It's not the worst cleaning out there, and they did not completely ruin the coin by doing it. I think the coin looks pretty nice.

I put it at AU-50 details. Not a terrible cleaning but the original surfaces are long gone.

I'd say AU-Details. Wouldn't go as low as XF because some weakness is present.
