I have several Morgan and Peace dollars that have some dramatic die cracks, usually running parallel to the edge of the coin, but I simply have not laid eyes upon enough gold coins to know if the same thing can happen with them. I would assume it could even though gold is softer and probably not as hard on the dies.
Anyway, here are the pics. The coin is a 1924 St. Gaudens double eagle. The line running through the "I" is raised metal as should be evident in the photos.
Quote: How does a die get scratched? Just careless handling or a piece of foreign material getting caught inside?
Both are possibilities. Someone with a tool in hand nicks the die. OR Something hard (wire brush bristle?) gets caught between the die and a coin being struck. That marks the die and subsequent coins display the mark.
