I am jealous of you guys in the U.S., your currency hasn't changed, so you can find old coins in circulation. Ours in Australia changed in 1966 so that's the oldest we can find, unless we are lucky enough to find a foreign coin. Steve

So, coins prior to 1966 were gathered up and melted?

Today I bought 2 rolls of Kenneddy's and 1 was full of 40% silvers. I also got 2 silver dimes (1 merc!) and a silver quarter in the last 2 weeks, with a handfull of wheaties.

Gary. In 1966 we changed to decimal coinage and all the pennies etc went back to the bank and were changed for dollars and cents. What happened to them after this, I'm not sure, but I guess they were melted down. Steve

I would think this qualifies as interesting find from circulation. I was born in 1962 and from as long as I can remember my dad had us pull wheat back cents from circulation whenever we saw them. From habit this continued even after I married and when visiting I would often give him a handful to add to his horde. Well I have just completes sifting thru this group. I would estimate 6-8,000 cents. There were no real great finds bot I seperated what I thought had value. Here is a basic roll breakdown. After finishing 4 cent folders 1941 forward this is what was left over. 1 roll + 45 coins...09-19P 2 roll + 16 coins...20-29P 1 roll + 31 coins...1943P(steel) 0 roll + 17 coins...09-39D 3 roll + 42 coins...40-49D 5 roll + 00 coins...50-58D( stopped there too plentiful) 0 roll + 41 coins...09-39S 2 roll + 26 coins...40-49S 2 roll + 02 coins...50-58S
Not sure what to do with the rest of the coins left over. Was thinking of putting them into circulation for others to find.

The pre decimal coinage was given equivalent decimal value and was still legal tender and could still be found in circulation into the 1970's. Sometime in the mid to late 70's it was officially retired. I think the official date was 1978. At 50% silver I bet the Australian govt was falling over themselves to melt it all down.

Total of eight Sackies. Not the coins themselves that's important, but the idea that, at least in this little town, they are circulating! Got four from a convenience store, two from Walmart, and two from Sonic.
