Renal is correct. The image is a representation of an Aboriginal tribal elder, based on the original artwork of Ainslie Roberts and designed by Horst Hahne. It is not intended to depict any person in particular.

Searched 20 rolls of pennies and 10 rolls of nickels. Aside from the usual Lincolns, Jeffersons, and early 60's QEII's, I scored a 1953 chromium plated nickel (I seem to find one every 10-20 rolls), a couple of Geo VI pennies, and a Geo VI nickel, two wheats, and the big catch being what I'm pretty sure is a 1985 pointed 5 penny. Only searched about 10k pennies until I managed to find one of them.

Thingee and Sports Writer both wondered about the image on the reverse of the Australian Two Dollar Coin.
Heck, if they had watched "Crocodile Dundee" or "Quigley Down Under" they would know the individual is an Aborigine.
By the way, I have several, thanks to my Aussie friends. I may start collecting them by date.

They are not a popular series to collect Gary so can be had for very reasonable prices. Of course if you get into the silver proofs and the gold proof then it can get expensive :D

Markn, I'm curious. Although the coins aren't a popular collector's issue, how do people feel about carrying them around in pockets and purses as spending money?

People are happy to carry and spend them. A very small stack of them has a lot of purchasing power. I collect all $1 coins and $2 coins I get each month in change and take me and my wife out to a nice dinner with what's in there at the end of the month. Usually its $50-$100.
As to whether they are better or worse than a $2 note? Well they last a heck of a lot longer, they are small, but are thick so are not easily mistaken for another denomination. At the end of the day our govt made the right choice I believe moving to these in 1988.

I love seeing the southern cross on coins (and flags for that matter). I have seen it only once in St. Lucia and may see it again (partially in Mexico).

My dad helps count the offering money at church. People put all sorts of weird stuff in the collection plate. He swaps it with something like the equivalent money, and gives the weird stuff to me. Last week there was a Malaysian 10 ringgit banknote (face value around A$3.50). Week before, I scored two Japanese 1 yen coins, an Austrian 5 eurocent... and a Reader's Digest token.
