Hi Guys,

Just wanted to share a recent acquisition of mine. What got me excited about this one was the possibility it could be something similar to:

Anonymous, Bronze, Neapolis, after 326 BC, AE (g 2,70"; mm 16; h 3), Laureate head of Apollo r., Rv. Forepart of man-headed bull r., flank of bull decorated by star; above, [PO]MAIΩN. Crawford 1/1;" HNItaly 251

This coin weighs in at a hefty 5.54g (substantially heavier than other similar examples I could find. Its highly unlikely that it is something as rare as whats mentioned above but where better to ask!

The images are not the best, trying to photograph this coin is really quite difficult.

Seems to be clearly from Naples, the "OLIT" above the bulls head is easy readable.
Very nice coin.

Thanks Medieval, the decoration on the bull also looks to be a star which looks similar to:

Thanks for the replies guys!

Yeah thats a fantastic resource, the coin looks to be very similar to:

Apollo left / Star with 4 rays, NEOΠ O(Above) ΣHT (behind, retro) IΛ (between legs), within circle (the line drawing in Sambon is incorrect, and shows a coin with Apollo facing right) (Sambon 563)

I have a couple more interesting Greek pieces to load up as well.

Your coin is Sambon 564: Apollo right / star with 4 rays, NEOΠOΛITHΣ above (Sambon 564, SNG ANS 427, SNG München 260). I'd have to double check the SNG references but they are probably accurate. The Sambon reference definitely is.

The picture on our site of Sambon 563 is a mistake on the part of Sambon- he mislabeled his line drawing of 564 and accidentally labeled it as 563! As you can see, the descriptions clearly do not match. Perhaps my note indicating this much is not enough, and I should remove the picture :)

Anyway, nice coin.
