I recently purchased a small collection of Ancient coins to get started in the hobby. Most of the coins I consider "junk coins" so I started cleaning them by soaking them in distilled water and using a hard bristle toothbrush to gently wipe away any crud.

It is a counter mark. With some research you might be able to identify which.

Hi Pirate,

Your first coin has reverse type VICTORIAE DD AVGGQ NN with mint mark SMTSr

What we can say for sure is that this coin was minted in Thessalonica and is either Constantius II or his brother Constans
