Hi All,
There is a tetradrachm for sale somewhere in the numismiverse that I would love an opinion on. Much as I trust the integrity of each and every one of you all, I am hesitant to post it here lest I shoot myself in the foot by inspiring someone to nab it first. The thing is I haven't purchased one of these before due to a) not trusting sometimes dubious sources with such highly faked and quite expensive (to me) items and b) not feeling rich enough to purchase such an item from a highly reputable source. So I was hoping someone more confident in their experience with these types might allow me to write to them privately with images of the coin for an opinion? Does anyone know of such a person in the group? Edited by Valecrucis 11/10/2014 09:13 am

I will wait for someone to volunteer. I would say that we are a pretty good bunch here, but you are very wise. You can see from the number of times any particular post is viewed, there are many, many lurkers around.
There are different types of tets. You might add a bit of a description, is it silver or bronze?
Edit: Sorry missed the reference to Alexander, I assume it is silver then.

I have been a member of this group for 8 years now and I have never seen or heard of any member snagging a coin that another member has shown an interest in. It is an unwritten rule here that it's something that is not done. So unless someone proves me wrong, you can post the coin here without any worries.

Echizento, I meant no offence to the group. I have nothing but good opinions of the members here, but as PishPash said......there are always lurkers. I am a member of another similarly honourable and friendly group and once had a nice coin 'snagged' by a lurker. He even had the cheek to come out of the shadows to share his prize subsequently. But to show my good faith I will post images of the coin in question in just a moment. As I will be doing this, perhaps someone might also help me pin down a reference for it, as the dealer has a habit of giving few details. I can't yet give the weight, but have written to the dealer asking for that and other reassurances.

Here it is. I know many of you will recognise the style of photograph and know the dealer. He is generally reliable, but I am sometimes a little doubtful of his experience.

Ask him for measurement, weight and picture of the edge.

Nice looking life time issue, I can't tell if it's a drachm or tetradrachm from the picture though.

He calls it a tetradrachm and I think he would be likely to get that right at least, Echizento. He has made some funny mis-identifications in the past though!
Yes, PishPash...I have asked him for those things, so shall wait and see...

Oh that's fantastic. Thank you Echizento! Just what I was looking for!
..and having taken a quick look: oh my! I hadn't realised there were quite so many varieties. It might take me a while to identify this one, let alone get my head around these types in general!

Ok...thanks to Echizento and the links to those downloads I have an ID on this tetradrachm. It is a lifetime or early posthumous issue of Pella, Macedon, Price 233A, Müller 106. Expected weight 16.7-17.3g. The marking in the left field is a trident with fillets, to the left. Thanks Echizento! Eg. http://www.hjbltd.com/currentbbs/de...ntBBSUnsoldsSo the question which remains is....is the one I have shown authentic? These are my thoughts: The metal looks OK with no obvious signs of casting that I can see. The pattern of wear looks normal and in a general sense the style looks OK. I have some concerns about the quality of the rendition of Zeus. It is difficult to compare it to better quality examples, but it seems this one is just a little crude in comparison to the couple of others I found, even accounting for wear. In comparison to all Alexander tetradrachm however, it doesn't seem so unusual, some of which are cruder than others. I also noticed that on the two others I found there is a low cross bar on the seat, but am not sure how significant its absence is here. So really I still need the advice of someone experienced with these types, who understands what normal is. Help please!

From what I can tell from the picture the coin looks fine. There are several variations of seat style found on this type. I think if you will find them in the Price catalog. The only concern I would have is where the coin coming from. Is it and ebay sale, or from a reputable dealer? And is there a return policy?

Yes it is from ebay. It is from a dealer I have bought from many times in the past though. He is a long term dealer with no issues hanging over his conduct thus far. I do not see him selling obvious fakes and though I have never asked and it has never been made clear, I doubt whether there would be any difficulty with a return. In the case of this one though, I will make sure with the dealer that that is the case before I make a purchase...a lifetime guarantee in the event it turned out to be a fake.

I really don't think you have anything to worry about with this coin.

OK. Well thanks to all for their help, particularly to you Echizento. I will just have to wait and see how the bidding goes. As a last and speculative point, anyone have thoughts on what might be respectable price for this piece as an item sold on ebay?
