I know that 1800 large cents are quite difficult to attribute - especially when they are in no better condition than this one. There are a couple of features on this coin which are causing problems for me. One is that the two lower right outside berries do not seem to match any reverses I can find for their relative positions. Second is that the words: ONE CENT are out of alignment with each other to a degree which does not seem to match any of the reverses. Can anyone help me with this?

Hi,

Could you post a URL of the reference photos you are using to make your comments?

Hello mdpmedia. The reference photos I am using are in the back of the book Penny Whimsy by Sheldon, Paschal and Breen. They are a little grainy, but helpful when looking at them through a loop. This coin seems close to S-200 and S-202, but the differences have kept me away from those identities.

I have also searched ha.com.

I appreciate any help you might provide on this. I will be searching more online today.

The reverse of this coin is close to S-202, especially the stem on the lower right outside berry being almost horizontal. I overlaid my coin on an identified S-202 I found online. Unfortunately there is not a match. I am posting the result here. It seems that very few of the 1800 Large Cents have the stem of the lower right outside berry almost horizontal. I suppose that it is not diagnostic, but its presence eliminates many varietal possibilities.

I think I have found the identity. It is made more difficult by the coin being in such poor condition, however. I believe it is an S-200. I found that using the overlay process really helped. Some of Sheldon's description is masked by the wear and damage to the coin, but I think I have it.

I'll go along with that, especially with the die bulge at STA. Yours has such a strong upper serif at the C in CENT, though.

Thanks, Philadelphian - I see what you mean about the strong upper serif...I had not noticed that difference. I gather you think that is not enough to disqualify the cent for this identification? I have not been working with large cents but a few years, so there is quite a lot I don't know or understand. I find them so fascinating!
