Hello! I tried navigating some databases, but I've had a lot of difficulty. I was wondering, from these pictures, if you can tell if this coin is authentic or not? I hadn't purchased off ebay before, but the experience has left me terribly anxious. Additionally, is there any tips that could help me in authenticating it myself? The link is here as well, in case the pictures aren't large enough: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/12148496....m1497.l2649Thank you! Lachlan

Unfortunately Lachlan, that link isn't working for me here in the UK. Do you have an ebay number for the sale?

to the community Your pictures along with the ones on ebay are a bit small to say for sure. From what I can see it looks OK. But this type has been copied a lot and we will need better pictures to say for sure. Does the seller have a return policy?

The ebay link for me has nothing to do with the sale of coins. Need bigger pictures than the ones already provided, to make a useful comment.

Hello and welcome. The link isn't working off me, either, but you can tell from the link the ebay Item number: 121484965873 - the forum should autolink there. As for the OP's question: it does not look fake to me, though personally, I would not recommend to anyone that their first purchase of an ancient coin on ebay be one from a seller in Portugal.

I would veto this coin, albeit is has now been sold. The seller offers no information whatsoever beyond some pictures. He took the time to mention that the coin is that of Augustus with his two grandsons on the reverse, Gaius and Lucius, yet nothing more? It of course could be real, the pictures when expanded offer some clarity but as a first coin? No way.

I don't like it.
Any seller selling a coin of that value would have a better description in order to maximise his price. It seems as though the seller is adopting the approach that "the least I say, the least can be used against me."
Also, no reputable seller would put the coin in a 2 x 2 'sideways'.
I would be too 'sus' to buy it.
Having said ALL of that (and meaning it) I do hope that I am wrong and it turns out to be one of the better buys you make.

Have to agree with 'Sap' on this one. While there is nothing on the pictures which raises alarm bells, would need better pictures for a judgement. One question in my mind: why is this coin in an undescribed 2x2 while the others he offers are not.

The reverse bothers me... I'm not experienced enough to make a definitive statement, but it looks cast to me, and in doubt do not buy. Just my Two Cents.

I'm terribly sorry for my slow reply, I didn't have access to my computer until today. I hope that these are a little clearer.

Lachlan, I'd like to know your appraisal once you have the coin in hand. I've bought from that seller several times (though never from ebay) and his stuff has always been genuine - but one should be always on the lookout for fakes, even from seemingly trustworthy sources. As for the lack of detailed information, it's normal. I'm under the impression he's not very knowledgeable, he sometimes shows up in forums asking for IDs. He should have posted size and weight though, and I'd request it before buying.

I ran this coin past two reputable dealers in Melbourne CBD. Both said the coin is authentic, but shows mild signs of cleaning. I'm pretty happy with that. Thanks for everyone's replies and help!

I bought this coin type for my father in law last Christmas, I paid about $75 and it was in like condition of yours. Based on the photos the coin looks absolutely fine. Its a good type of a historic figure available in higher grades for relatively cheap.

I have always had trouble in my own mind, when it comes to buying ancient coins on ebay. My problem is that I always like to see the coin in hand before making a decision to buy. I would definitely, in this case, like to have a very close look at the edges of the coin, all around. It looks reasonably OK from the pictures, but I nevertheless feel rather cold about it, as regards authenticity. Need confirmation of the weight at around 3.8 grammes. Sale price of GBP 130 is OK, if genuine.

If two reputable dealers both gave it the OK then it should be fine. They'd have known to check for an edge seam. Overall a nice Augustus; much nicer than mine of the same type that was broken in half and glued back together!
