I certainly would be the last person to differ with ICCS but AU-55? 5 buyers are watching so is it glare on photo or ? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1858-ICCS-G...t_1412wt_916I realize this is a tough coin to find in EF to AU but given what I would have to pay for this coin in that price range, I did expect more.

i have no idea, I really doubt and don't think that it looks like a AU-58 or 55. I would say more less a AU-50 or a EF-40.
nice coin but not a high AU nice!

That seller has the poorest pics of any major Canadian dealer on ebay, he's counting on customers to buy the holder not the coin. Unfortunately, it works.

I find this coin to be very tough to grade compared with, say, an 1870 25cent or 50cent coin. Does the different obverse wear differently? It seems that if you compare a graded, say, VF30 20cent piece with a VF30 25cent coin, the 20cent coin seems to have noticeably more wear. Is it just a case of apples to oranges and one has to compare the 20cent piece only against other 20cent coins?

I agree with the grade. The photo of the obverse is poor. The photo of the reverse is a solid AU.

Nice coin, I believe these are scans, which tend to do this to coins. Especially vicky's with darker, uneven toning. I bought an NGC graded 1864 New Brunswick 20 cent a few months back, the pictures made it look like an XF-40, I asked the seller for pics instead of scans and voila, it was actually a solid AU-50 (Although the slab graded AU-55). The reverse seems to be a good indicator of the grade here. If you're interested try asking for better pics.

I did ask the Seller for clearer photos and to his credit I was sent better obverse and reverse scans. I have not been able to figure out how to upload them to the forum yet. I followed the instructions from the forum article but it is the upload I am failing at.
At any rate, the clearer scans still showed either unusual wear or weak strike on the obverse. I can only conclude that it must be a weak obverse strike.

Must be a weak obverse. The obverse "wear" is not in line with the crisp looking reverse, as mentioned. Better examples certainly exist at the grade, and at slightly lower grades.

Ok fellows, since we all have grading opinions and we judge here based on pictures posted, HOW would you all grade my example of a 1858 20 cent. Please feel free to comment whatever you wish. Thank you for your input and help.

What a difference the new pictures make, based on the ebay photo's it did not look too much higher than my vf30. I would wonder about the details around the ear (above right, below left), they seem a bit weak/worn. I would think at best a AU-50, but maybe nicer in hand.

The ICCS coin is a solid au55---judged by the eyelid, rims, and laurel detail. The photos look like bad scan--is all.

@47P7, make a new thread for your, don't revive an old thread regarding a different coin, this causes confusion.
