With my limited knowledge of these, I think that they are both a bronze follis of Michael IV. Is this correct?

The second question is about the second coin. What should I do to improve or restore it.

#2 should soak for a bit, and toothpick the dirt off, Looks like that dirt should clean up pretty nice and easy.
Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about byzantine coins yet, so, I'm really useless on that front!

Nothing stronger than distilled water (not tap water) and a piece of bamboo, toothpick or toothbrush. Soak for a couple fo days and then pick. It should come up a treat.

do what pish and CGC said...and always listen to ski for byzantine attribution.

the dirt on the second coin looks like it really want to come off. check that small green spot on the obverse of the second coin, may be bronze disease. it if come off as powedery lite greens stuffwhen scraped with a toothpick or fingernail, it is.

the green stuff on the first coin looks solid and ok, scrape it to compare.
