Is this normal for a toonie?
To have the core tight near the boy's legs
and a bit of a gap between the core and the
rim pieces, up near the soldiers' heads.

Was looking at the package with a loupe and noticed a gap,
besides the rim waffling.

Check your toonies and report back if you see such a gap.

After a comparison I say your core is off center. Mine all have an even gap around the "gold" part.

This is very common on all toonies. Most coins are a tiny bit off-centered, on bi-metallics this tiny variance is easier to spot.

Thanks @Harmonica and @nalaberong,
three of the five coins in the pack were like that.
Was hoping I was rich, but will go to work on Monday now,
unless 649 comes in.

yes this is very common for these toonies and any toonies for that matter.

However look at the maple leafs beside the date, one looks to be faded near the base of the leaf.

I think it is a bit of a weak strike.

Thanks VancouverIslandCoinKid

The new toonies have a lot of other issues too, like the rims on them are very uneven.

Yes it is common as well, called a waffled rim,
from the edge lettering being off centre.
