This appears to be either Courteau variety 26, 28, or 29. All have a rarity factor of 1 (on a scale of 1-10). When studied in hand, I suspect the token can be positively identified. But, from the present photos I dare not make a positive attribution. F-12.

I don't have the experience with these that Doug does, but I was in the F12-15 ballpark too.

Thanks guys - anyone else wants to chip in?
Had no idea that there were so many varieties 'colonialtokens', is there any online reference to those?

There is nothing currently on-line that I am aware of. A.D. Hoch's "Canadian Tokens and Medals" contains an anthology of many pioneers of researches in the field. This work contains the a re-print of the narrative of Doctor Eugene Courteau's work in this field. Hoch's work is out of print and copies are somewhat pricy, but available.
In 1993, Doctor Richard W. Bird published a more user friendly tome of Doctor Courteau's work. Dr. Bird's work contains drawings of Dr. Courteau narrative. This work is more readily obtainable.
In any event, Dr. Courteau identifies 20 different varieties of the 1843 HALF PENNY, 9 different varieties of the 1843 ONE PENNY, 12 different varieties of the 1854 HALF PENNY, and 11 different varieties of the 1854 ONE PENNY.
Most varieties are differentiated by variations of the rigging. Many lower grade specimens are inconclusive to identify as the diagnostic die-markers have been worn away.

Yes. excellent book.
Doctor Bird's work includes picture drawings (no photos) illustrating Doctor Courteau's narrative description (Dr. Courteau's narrative is also provided).
At present, it is the best book available on that series.

I may just track one down shortly (I think I know a used book/coin dealer with one in stock). Thanks!

I stopped in today, but he sold the copies he had. He said he may sell me his copy, if he can find it. He may check with Richard to see if he has any copies left too, so hopefully I'll have my own soon. Thanks for letting me know about its value as a reference.

There are none currently on ebay. There are seven copies on ABEbooks. Type in 'Coins of New Brunswick' on the ABE book site. doug
