Ok, so I bought two coins I really liked from them. It was shipped from them with USPS express mail 10. November. Normally it takes 3 days before its in Norway after leaving the US.
This time something odd happened:
The 17. nov - no new status except showing that it left the US on the tracking. Same for the morning 18. nov - about 08:00, I was then concerned the item had been lost and called Norwegian mail, they couldn't see anything and also agreed for express mail it should normally be there within 3 days.
At 08:55 the status of USPS changed to "Departed" Oslo, Norway. "Your item departed a transfer airport in Metropolitan Area, Oslo, NORWAY on November 14, 2014 at 11:25 am. The item is currently in transit to the destination."
So - 50 minutes after I called Posten (Norwegian mail and the item was NOT in Norway on either page) it suddenly was in Norway according to USPS, but according to Posten it is still in transit TO Norway.
Hence I reported the item lost since now it was just weird. Posten and I read the message as a "Auto status" - just generated to show when it was expected to be in Norway by USPS, not that it actually was in Norway. These are rush items which means customs give them highest priority and they are dealt with within 1 day and from were it arrives to were I live is aprox 20 KM which means it doesn't use 3 days to go 20 km. Also - it can't pass at least 3 points of scanning and a post office and be there that long without me getting notice as Posten sends out recipient card to pick such items up same day they arrive.
We now have 25.11 and still no item. Great collection knows what Posten says, they know what their tracking says and the difference between USPS and Posten tracking results. I have also compared to other EMS shipping's to see what statuses they show, no one ever used this one.
Great collection now says:
USPS says its in Norway, and they are checking with customs USPS says its in transit etc
The last person I spoke with might have mad me a bit of because the skipped answering my email for over a week and also the last reminder and the tone of the person was condescending - as if 4000 USD is pocket change...
But is my assumption right about USPS using auto statuses, or am I wrong?

Bump to get this more attention for you Christian, but I don't think it's an auto status. I believe it has to be scanned to get an update.
I'm sorry for your troubles! I hope everything works out in the end... I take it you had the package shipped International Express?
Unfortunately, it's out of GreatCollections' hands at this point. I hope the USPS doesn't screw up your order!

Well - it is insured, so GC will have to pay me back...or the credit card company. But the status is like nothing I have seen before...It is also enterily wrong in what it says, geograp. speaking.
Also - why would the status update 4 days after and stay that way for the rest of the time?

Also; I spoke with Posten again today, they couldn't find me in the customs system or in their system. A status saying it departed Oslo, when it should have arrived in Oslo didn't give more sense to them either. Short terms: shippment has never touched ground in Norway and if so it has:
Bypassed Customs Bypassed Sorting terminal (twice) Bypassed Post office Bypassed Pick-up slip Bypassed at least 2 reminders OF such pick-up
and it was no history of such item passing through customs on my name either..

Thanks - but I went the simple way...since GC didn't answer (they said a couple of days, I gave them three after they igonred my emails), so I called the credit card company and they would open a case.

The problem is that you're effectively taking it out on the Seller, who isn't responsible for the mail's operation. Yes, it's the seller's job to get the item to you, but ultimately it's out of their hands. The mail messed up, but the seller has to pay for it. Cost of doing business, but understand that the seller did everything they were supposed to (and *could* do). This is the mail's fault, and you need to file a claim with the mail service. Not that it will get you far, but that's who is at fault.

Please elaborate on how and why a customer in Norway(or any other place) shall deal with USPS, when they are not the shipper or the ones who have the insurance?

https://www.usps.com/help/claims.htmClearly says that the shipper needs to start the process by creating an inquiry. That will take days, even weeks before a claim can be opened. A constant barage of emails doesn't change that.

Dear Christian,
I am sorry that the package has still not arrived. When we last e-mailed, we started to follow up with USPS here, even though it was very early - this process does take some time, plus it was a short week for us due to Thanksgiving. Most post office employees tell us come back after 30 days, especially on international shipments.
However, rest assured, everything we send to you is full insured. And next week, Nina from our office will be in touch with the insurance claim forms so we can process a refund.

Ok, thanks. I would have liked that I was informed about that earlier, because my understanding was that I would hear something within a couple of days, and since that didn't happen I gave up.

Your situation just stinks Christian! I hope everything works out for you! Even when the mail loses things, they usually find them, eventually. : (

Although I am a little late on posting to this forum, this package did show up in Norway, it took about three weeks from the U.S. to Norway - more than it should have taken, but it did arrive safely. After being scanned in Oslo on November 14th, it then appeared in Norwegian customs on November 30th.
Again, everything we send to clients is fully insured, even if it doesn't display through the USPS website.
Best regards,
Ian Russell

Thank you for following up, Ian. Makes a big difference in your favor to address these things publicly. Here's another pie we have in the oven which you're probably going to see: https://goccf.com/t/192880
