I recently found this coin in a roll. It was crusted up whitish green and oxidized beyond identification, so I broke my cardinal rule and cleaned it just so I could see what it was!

Well, it is a 1941-P Wheat penny with what appears to be the shape of an island or country over the head of Lincoln.
At first, I thought it was carved into the penny itself, but now I think perhaps it is extra copper that was added somehow. (Maybe a copper bullet fragment?)

It is an interesting piece to say the least!

Any and all comments, opinions and thoughts will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I'm thinking this might be the result of the Cent getting soldered/brazed to something and then broken off. Some of that something (copper jewelry?) is still stuck.

It is the shape of New Jersey.

My guess is that someone got bored and got carving.

It also follows the highest contours of the coin, where the attaching agent would be the strongest.

COIN-cidentally looks like NJ. However, I agree it might be just an artifact of soldering.
