Hey all. I was checking ebay and I found this Alexander III that I was interested in. If I buy it, it will be my first Greek, so I'm excited. This is the coin: http://www.ebay.com/itm/HHC-GREEK-M...em58b9204bb2 (there are better pics in the description). I had three questions before I placed a bid: #1. Is it genuine? #2. Is the attribution of Sear 6739 correct? #3. Are there any signs of bronze disease? Thanks in advance!

Just checked Wildwinds, it says Alexander the Great AE18. Head of Herakles in lionskin headress / ALEXANDROU between club and bow in case. The coin I'm interested in looks like the examples given in Wildwinds, and I think this is a fairly common type, so I agree with the "genuine" assessment. How about those surfaces? Edit: After close inspection I'm not seeing any signs of active BD. So I guess we're clear!

I don't see any active signs of BD, the surface does has some ruff areas. But for the price it's well worth it.

Almost certainly the real deal !
You should expect the price to take a big jump at the close. But you never know ! Thanksgiving weekend is a lousy time to auction coins. Most people are distracted by other things and great deals can be found. I would expect the final price to be closer to $30 or more. Under $20 is a 'no brainer'
Back in the Stone Age (before the internet) I used to find these in dealer junk boxes for $5 a pop ! Would that I had not been so fussy ! I bought a few gems but passed on hundreds of them.

Thank you Medieval, Echi, and FR for your help! Just to let everyone know, the seller with the Alexander I want has tons great deals here. The store name is "Holding History" and they are also a Vcoins seller. There are a lot of cheap Byzantines, Romans and Greeks ending in a few hours if you're interested (sort by ending soonest). I recommended Topcat should go for a Severan denarius that's being sold there. Just wanted to let my CC Family know, get some great deals everyone! Edit: I'm passing on the coin, it shot a little out of my price range. If you want, go for it. :)

$25 total with shipping was a good price but not a real steal. Caution is always best with relatively common types such as this. December is the best time to bargain shop for ancients. With a bit of effort and a few 'lowball' bids you can almost certainly do better.

Nathan @ Holding History has been a member here for quite sometime and I have bought some of my top pieces from him. I have nothing bad to say about him or his goods. He is usually pretty exact with his attributions and unlike many dealers, he gives the same attention to the lower priced piece as much as the higher end ones. I would personally vouch for him and say you can buy whatever from him with confidence and to expect and very professional experience. This is not something to be taken lightly in an age of fakes and frauds. Good luck WC.

Quote: Holding History has been a member here for quite sometime Do you mean the seller is also a CCF member? Thanks for the recommendation, Anoob! Out of curiosity, what coins in your collection have you bought from Holding History?

Hum well I will have to check. I dont usually keep generic seller flips unless they are themselves antiques, but recently I bought a slabbed Diocletian AR Argenteus. I can tell you have spent a couple hundred dollars here and there over the years. pictured here... When I say he is a member, I mean he is here on CCF. Maybe he will see this thread and chime in. I know he is a very busy fella.

No slight was intended by my observation regarding price. 25 clams is a reasonable price to pay ! But I have 'stolen' many coins at auctions in the few weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas ! While we would not wish to shortchange anyone here on CCF ........ It is delightful to pay half price too !
