Being new to collecting, I'm a bit perplexed by what I see on ebay.

At this time there are many many Braided Hair Large Cents in " buy it now" listings over $500, many more over $1000, and lots and lots more with minimum starting bids in those price ranges, but all have either zero bids, or are just sitting and not selling.

In fact the highest bid on any braided hair large cent as of the time I'm writing this is less than $88.

I can't justify bidding on or buying any of the higher priced coins. I have to assume that the reason nobody is bidding or buying is because they are either not worth what the seller is asking, or they're undesirable coins for some reason I don't know of.

Can anyone tell me of a website, or ebay seller perhaps that would have braided hair large cents in vf-ms grades with no danger of a newbie unkowingly buying a problem coin? I'd hate to spend good money on what I think is a high grade coin only to post it in the grading forum, and find out it's cleaned, recolored, dipped, artificially toned, etc.

I would probably trust well know ccf members bedore I'd trust random eBayers. Wish there were more sales going on here.

If you can find a copy of this, it would be well worth the investment.

Thanks Pete I'll check into that.

I ask about vf-ms grade coins because I like the website Mintproducts, where I can buy problem free fine grade cents all day long, and accumulate points, which are worth money toward future purchases by doing so.

Trouble is, that's all they have is fine grade.

If I want anything higher grade, all I know to do is venture out into the dangerous world of ebay.

I'm certainly trying to learn how to spot problems in old copper, but I'm not that good at it yet. I imagine that alot of it comes with experience.

Hi,
I use CoinSniper.com a lot when I am looking to buy some great coins. They do have Braided Hair Large Cents from time to time.

Also, I use this forum, and several coin valuing sites to price coins I see on ebay or other auction sites. Two of the sites I use are:

www.pcgs.com - Price Guide

www.coinstudy.com

As far as ebay sellers go, read their feedback from other customers, find out how long they've been selling on ebay, and do your research on the item you are looking at. When you buy from ebay sellers, ebay offers buyer's protection which helps protect you from scams.

I hope this information will help you work on your collection(s).
Take Care!

A couple of sites with some higher end early copper. Lots of pics too so you can get a feel for coins and their looks and prices.

This is one of the finest and most extensive collections of early copper I have ever seen on the internet for sale.

They have an 1855 Flying Eagle cent pattern for $1300. PCGS PF53.
