Need A Little Help Identifying Coins Please

black_25 New Member United Kingdom 2 Posts	Posted 12/01/2014 3:31 pm Hi guys, need a little help identifying some coins. The first ones as far as I can tell are silver. Here they are, the biggest one is approx 39.5mm and the smallest is approx 17mm and they are all dated 1887. This one has a different date at 1902 and looks different: I also have these, I think 2 are gold sovereigns a 3 are half sovereigns but not really sure. The 2 bigger ones are approx 22mm and the other 3 are approx 19mm. I have had these a very long time in storage which were given to me years ago with a message telling me that they will help me some day. I think that time has now come. They seem to be in really good condition apart from the silver 1902 one which is a bit dirty looking but I'm no collector so what do I know...lol. Thanks guys Report this Post to the Staff

Medieval Pillar of the Community 3772 Posts	Posted 12/01/2014 4:22 pm The top group are English coins with the 'Coronation Head' of Queen Victoria. You definitely have a Threepence, a Florin and a Crown - would need clearer assortment to make comments on everyone. The 1902 is a Crown. Probably best to go and see a local coin dealer with those, some of the 1887 issues seem to be in a nice condition. Report this Post to the Staff
Sap Moderator Australia 16834 Posts	Posted 12/01/2014 4:39 pm The top coins are, I assume, a full set of circulating "jubilee head" silver coins from that year. You've got: threepence, sixpence, shilling, florin, halfcrown, double-florin, and crown. There were two different jubilee-head sixpences made that year; yours is the first "shield" type. The shield type was withdrawn, because the design too closely resembled the half-sovereign; it was too easy for counterfeiters to gold-plate them. Your gold coins are, indeed, sovereigns and half-sovereigns. Given that the 1887 coins (gold and silver) all appear to be in excellent condition with much the same toning pattern, I suspect they coins may have come from a mint set. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis Report this Post to the Staff
