I am a big fan of Ike dollars. I have been putting together a few different sets both high end ms graded and raw.

My big question to the high knowledge coin collectors here is this:

Why does the 1976-D Type 1 MS65 have such a wide price range? I've seen them being sold for 50+ and I've also seen them sell for 12 bucks.

PCGS price guide has them at 15 dollars. NGC has them at 52.50 and Numismedia has them at 48.75. Whats going on here? That is a huge price difference.

I know someone will respond with a coin is valued at what someone will buy it for. But for these companies to have them at such a huge price guide difference is odd. I was trying to get some insight on this.

Coins, I have enough knowledge to collect what I like. Similar items, say collectible card, be they baseball or card games; seem the price guides take into account major retailers price that were recent. So depending on the places polled for recent prices that could cause a very drastic shift in the price range. This goes with just about any collectible where intrinsic value is involved. I would need to know more on HOW they arrive at the pricing for those places to tell if they are going by &M polling or maybe ebay polling for the statistics.

"what someone is willing to buy it for" is a bit outdated in the digital economy and now is closer to "what did someone pay for it last night?" Maybe not all those places are as up-to-date also mean the prices are last months prices as was how it was with dead-tree stock pricing guides before the digital age.

This is just educated speculation having to do with other collectibles in modern times, so hope it might help at least a little. In the end you will probably has to ask them directly. Are those selling at those places from the company or more like consignment where the owner places the asking price like ebay?
