I was noticing some pretty cool designs available on medals in the recent U.S. Mint catalog. What is the general feeling about these kind of products by the collecting community? Are they collectible? Worth anything?

For example, I like quite a few of these dollar sized military themed medals:

Definitely collectable but if there's no mintage limit, they might still be making them in 50 years time.

Just don't expect to make a profit.

If something exists someone collects it.

I prefer to collect 'Cinderrala antiques'.

You know how Cinderrala was not thought of much then was all that? Coins were never ment to be collected, they were unitarian, to be used. When a mint or some company like Upper Deck or Royal Dalton tells me to collect something it looses its magic.

To each their own, you say you like them so pick a couple up.

I will next time I order something else from the mint so I don't have to pay shipping on just the medals. The 1.5" ones are only $7, so not much to lose.

I consider them very collectible. That's probably why I do!

Of course, my definition of "collectible" has nothing to do with the initial cost of an item or its potential to increase in value. For me, something is collectible if it interests me from either an aesthetic, cultural or historical perspective.

I view the coins and medals and ephemera I collect as opportunities to learn more about the subjects they portray. I often refer to them as "history in the round." Some of what I collect is worth more today than the price I paid; the value of other pieces has remained the same or has decreased. None of that matters to me.

I'll get off my soapbox now and just encourage you to collect whatever you find interesting and hope that you enjoy whichever US Mint medals you eventually make a part of your collection.
