Quote: I cannot find any info concerning the missing Canada on the large cent. How many were minted? Does the regular proof set have the same error? Is the antique set also considered a proof finish, or what is the finish called other than the color? The sets were matte proof and mirror proof respectively. All 24,893 of the antique are missing the "Canada" on the 1 cent. All 18,376 of the mirror 1 cents have the "Canada" on them.

The second set with a brilliant finish has Canada restored to the 1 cent piece.
As far as I know both sets are priced around the same.

I have both sets. Neither penny has Canada on it.

@lyradnoj: Like CC-Ottawa pointed out, the word "Canada" should be on the obverse of the proof penny (if it's there), below our Queen's effigy, which is different from the other 4 coins in the set....

Ooops.
Yes, it's the matte one that doesn't have CANADA on it, not the mirror one. Sorry about that.

Now I have a question for those who own the antique set. Does your set have any scratch marks on the obverse side of the coins? I have some on mine, I saw some on PC50's photo, and I even saw some on cdncoins' stock photo, like this: And do you think by opening the rectangular capsule and let the coins tone naturally could fix that?

Still, it is good check.
Who knows, might be some sets different from all the group.

Hello, Most antique sets I've owned had scratch marks on the antique coins. I'm guessing it had something to due with the mint trying to make the sets look old... These sets are also one of my favorite coin sets that the RCM mint has issued. It's hard to keep them in stock. Tomasz Coin Gallery London

I have both sets as well but what I find interesting is that the large cent on both sets is copper plated sterling silver as opposed to being solid copper. I understand that the reason for the reissue in "Proof Finish" is because of the backlash from collectors not being pleased with the looks of the "Antique Finish".

Unlike the more recent "Antique finish", that looks solid, these coins, as it looks to me, has some top layer, and it makes the coin to look like old. Something like the layer of the photo-films (if you remember these). And this appearance is due to the "scratches" , that you mentioned above.....looks this layer can be removed with the fingers and underneath it will be BU finish. Added:Just checked the book: The issue price of each set (Mirror/Antique) was $99.00! This interesting, the sets have really high final mintage, but looks like, community of collectors does like them...so why they not appreciated in the price?
