With the holidays almost upon us, I thought I'd toss out a few book titles that I believe would make a great gift to give (or get!).

Pictures from a Distant Country: Seeing America Through Old Paper Money

Another terrific volume from Richard Doty, the former Senior Curator of numismatics at the Smithsonian Institution. (Doty died on June 2, 2013.) Pictures from a Distant Country takes a historical look at life in America during the 1800s using vignettes found on obsolete bank notes.

The book is extensively illustrated via notes from the Smithsonian collection and is a wonderfully fascinating read.

List price: $24.95
Published: 2013

Coins & Collectors: Golden Anniversary Edition

I've mentioned before here on CCF how much I enjoy reading this volume from Q. David Bowers. It holds the attention of the reader with its fascinating stories of famous coins, collectors, dealers, auctions and a multitude of other aspects of the hobby.

If you (or someone you know) likes numismatic books that relate the great history of our hobby - without discussions focused on mintages, grading or current valuations - this is the book to get!

List Price: $29.95
Published: 2014

Milestone Coins: A Pageant of the World's Most Popular and Significant Money

An interesting and entertaining volume that explores famous coins from around the world and throughout history. It was written by Ken Bressett - you know him as the editor of the Guide Book of United States Coins aka the "Red Book."

If reading the stories behind some of the most famous coins in the world sounds interesting to you, pick up a copy of Milestone Coins without delay.

List Price: $29.95
Published: 2007

Guide Book of United States coins 2015

If there's a new collector in your life - or if you've begun collecting US coins yourself - this is the "must have" book. The " Red Book" is not the final authority on any of the US coinage series it covers, but it is unmatched in terms of the breadth of the information it presents. No collector's book shelf should be without a copy.

List Price: $16.95
Published: 2014

Thanks for the list I have ordered the 2015 Standard catalog of world coins 2001 to present. That should keep me busy over the holidays.

Except for the Red Book the items you mentioned are "curl up before the fireplace" type of reading.

I suggest also considering some of the specialty books.
Snow's guide to IHC's.
Lange's guide to Lincoln cents.
That sort of stuff.
The main problem with those type of books is that they tend to be on the pricy side.

And don't forget the ANA grading guide.
Or the Cherrypicker's guides.

The only problem with coin books for presents is you really have to know what the people your planning giving them to need or want. If not a big collector, then that book may just sit. That is what is so great about that Red Book. Vary much usable for anyone. I give about 10 of those for Christmas presents each year.

@just carl: I agree that the books I mentioned are best given to collectors who appreciate the story and history of numismatics in a broad sense vs. those focused on completing a single (or several) US coin series.

I was just trying to "expand horizons!'

As part of my club's newsletter, I make a book recommendation once a month. In the last 2 years I've recommended 2 out of the 4 books listed. I guess I have a couple recommendations already for 2015.

Numismatic-Books-For-The-Holidays-Gift-Ideas

I gathered a bit of info................

Originally published in 1980 THE COIN ATLAS provides a unique guide to world coinage, putting the reader in direct touch with the rulers and states which issued them, the craftsmen who made them and the people who used them. Listed by country it gives an account of world coinage from its beginnings in the 7th Century BC. Alexander the Great, Cleopatra and Napoleon appear alongside other rulers, of whose existence we only know about because of the coins issued in their name. It follows the development of the four separate coinage traditions of the Mediterranean, India, China and Islam, as the origins and progress of coinage in each country are traced within a concise historical framework. It also describes when and why new currencies and denominations were introduced, what they were made of and how they were designed and inscribed.
About the Author

Joe Cribb, Ian Carradice and Barrie Cook all curate different exhibitions of coins at the British Museum and have written and edited various books and articles. John Flower, cartographer, worked in the War Office, in commercial map houses and is now freelance.
