1. Is this website affiliated with or sponsored by any numismatic company other than itself? I see the adds at the top of the page and wonder if this site is run by the same people who run those sites.

2. What are the rules on recommending websites? I see some threads where someone types in a web address, and it's no problem, but other times I see where someone has tried to recommend a website and the address gets auto-deleted.

2nd part to question 2 - if I want to start a new thread to just say "Hey look at the great deal that blankblank dot com has right now", or "Wow! what a great ebay seller so and so is" can I do that?

Just curious.

Scott.

1. No, this is a privately owned site. The ads are purchased by those companies.

2. The primary rule is that new users should refrain from doing so. Established users can post links in appropriate forums. If a posted link is auto-deleted, it is for good reason. Do not ask why and do not try to get around the block.

We apply plainly subjective rules regarding linking. We've been burned repeatedly in the past by other sites spamming the forum and trying to steal affiliate links - these, in addition to hosting non G-rated ads on your website, are the primary reasons why you see links auto-deleted. They're sites which would have earned a ban as members.

We're careful about member-linked commerce sites because in a lot of cases, your anecdotal experience might be all we have about that vendor and you just got very, very lucky. We have to take that broader view for the protection of the many (outnumbering participants at least 5:1) people who read the thread without posting - the thread forms their only information source and we need to make sure that information is accurate.

Yes, our more senior members get less scrutiny. They're senior, and if they posted crap they wouldn't have gotten to "senior."

We have dedicated threads in the eCommerce Forum for your comments regarding ebay sellers, and that's where you'd also go with time-sensitive seller/buyer issues. And if you find a deal *that* good, post that puppy in Main Coin where we'll all see it.

I made the mistake of posting a link I shouldn't when I first started. All apologies.

I use the following to guide my to post or not to post a link decision. Nothing self promoting and anything only in furthering the site mission of education. Sometimes education does include the marketplace and market pricing. If a dealer link with market pricing were to get auto deleted, then take the time to edit it out yourself so the website looks nice still.

One link I have used a couple of times which seems to have been permitted by the software at least is this one.

http://www.upstatecoins.com/v/dealer.pdf

To me that is lots of good marketplace information to help guide collector buy / sell decisions. I can see how it could be viewed as spamming though. Personally I have no affiliation with them (or anyone outside the PVC business). They seem to be a large player. I only found them through an ad on the back of a certain gray colored weekly newsletter which may or may not be mentionable here.

Ruling?
