Does anyone know the significance of the number (16) in the obverse legend? It's not part of the date which has all 4 digits on the reverse and it's not the denomination. I have seen only one other also dated 1621 with no explanation. KM is of no help either.

The coin was worth 16 groszy.

There seems to be some confusion over what 1 Thaler equaled in złoty, since it's common to see 10 groszy as 1/4 thaler, 16 groszy as 1/4 thaler, and 18 groszy as 1/4 thaler. I for one, do not completely know myself. I do know the value of the złoty decreased over time, as the value of the red złoty increased and the silver content of the grosz diminished until it was a copper coin by the fall of the First Republic.

<--- Needs to dedicate some time to figuring it all out...someday.

Nice example of this type. Obverse head detail shows quite clearly.
Mine is more like some of those weakly struck shillings sixpences and groats of Elizabeth 1, where the head detail is rather poor, rest of the coin OK.
