I know for Christmas my girl is getting me a loupe and I'm going to go through the roughly 50 pounds of copper cents I've been saving over the past year and upgrade my 1909-2007 album and possibly fill some holes. I purchased the album and just thumbed through my penny hoard till I stopped finding fillers. Now that I'm going to have a loupe I can better grade them and look far varieties and errors while organizing them in to year/decades rolls instead off all mixed together in the ammo can. Anyone have any suggestions as to making the process easier? I will be off work the next few days due to having strep throat and was thinking about getting them separated into years so I can look for the more rare types first when I do get my Loupe. Any advice or strategies would be great and I've been researching the lincoln resource as to where I might start for varieties and errors.

Here's what I would do (...and as I recall, I actually did!)

Make two piles and separate each pile by year or decade. Make a pile on the left of "choice" coins, or the nicer ones of the group, and on the right, the not-so-choice coins.

You'll have a lot of RBs from the '50s and even '40s, and you'll have some damaged coins with verdigris. Even for special varieties, you'll want to look at the nicest coins.

But here's the deal - if you only look at the choice coins, you'll totally forget to look at the poorer coins. So after you have them by decade and choice/not choice, look at each decade again to sort them by year. You'll have a better idea of choice for the era and lesser coins since you'll have looked at them once. But go through and sort them by year, it'll be a lot easier to look at them for varieties.

It's a FUN project, but tiring. Go for the marathon approach though it's tempting to sprint. Come up with a reasonable schedule to stick to it. Perhaps, go backwards, too, since the older coins are the more exciting ones. That might help keep your motivation up.

GOOD LUCK! Hope you find some good stuff!

its only 3 boxes of pennies. shouldnt be too hard. just make sure you got a reject pile that wont spill. hate to have to relook a 2nd or 3rd time something you already decided to not keep with a loupe. not as bad with just your eyes, but with a loupe your eyes need more breaks.

I would separate them "one" time. Figure out your strategy before you get started. Make as many piles as you need. I would separate them by potential error type. In other words, make your loupe work easier. If you're looking for RPM's, put all your potential RPM's together. With the remaining coins, I'd create a pile for well circulated coins and a pile for potential value/upgrade coins. The goal should be to minimize the number of times you have to sort the coins.

Thanks so far for the opinions. I've only been collecting about half the time I've been saving copper cents. I've always tried to save the copper so just started throwing them in a mason jar. When that got full is about the time I switched it to the 50 cal. Ammo can and started collecting. I've for the most part kept any s mints, BU and MADs that I've come across but I'm sure I've missed some over time. I'm excited to see if I have anything in hoard and will keep everyone posted if I find anything and think I might right down all my finds to see which cents seem to be more popular.
