Today I was coverage for a branch near my place. So I'm getting my cash box ready for action & as I'm getting to know the plp i'll be wrking with me I was inform that a group of nunes made a large deposit in old bills they were making jokes on how old the bills were like how they were the first bill every printed. Some bill's were $1,$2,$5 and some $10 with rolled coins & that the branch manager rejected the deposit because the bills were to old & she had to verfiy if the branch cld still accept old currency so after a few phone calls & web searching the deposit was accepted. So what does this manager do with all these old bills well she ships them out! out to be destroy I'm pretty sure what a cruel way to start my day & to rub salt in the wound one of the banker kept ONE note a five just one note not two or ten or heck the whole deposit because if she was interested in one note why not all. I even ask her why she kept it she said it looked cool like a piece of art she never seen a gold seal I ask what about the other bills how did they look she said she forgott so at this point I ask if she will sell it to me she ask how much I was willing to pay for it I said face vaule she she laughed and said no that shes giving it to her dad because he collects money!! I felt like I was in the twilght zone

It makes me thankful that the US doesn't remove old coins that much.

The banks and the Treasury are not in the market to keep old bills in the hands of collectors, to them we are more a nuisance. It could be worse, in Canada they are actively removing old coins from circulation to recover the metal, mostly nickel. They did the same thing when $1 and $2 bills were removed from circulation.

While the Mint and to a lesser extent, the Treasury do make collector items there is no incentive for them to keep old stuff out there. Banks don't want to deal with old currency as it is just a hindrance to their efficient operation so they just send anything unusual back and let it get taken care of. Occasionally there will be a teller who contacts a friend who is a collector or might be a collector themselves but many banks frown on that sort of activity.

In the 1970's my older sister worked as a bank teller and pulled hundreds of dollars of silver coin and old bills. Her bank allowed them to set this aside and cash it out with a supervisor at the end of the day. I regret I was too young to get in on it, I was still roll searching pennies for wheats and the occasional IHC and did not have enough allowance money to get in on silver purchases much less old bills. She has quite a collection of silver and gold certificates and other neat stuff.

I work at a bank, and yes this happens all the time, but all the tellers know that when I big batch of old money comes in to come grab me. If any of it is worth something I will usually buy it. I have bought several .999 oz silver dollars for face value from a teller drawer. We had one guy come in with 3000, yes thats right, 3000 eisenhower silver dollars that he just wanted to trade in for face value, unfortunately I wasnt there at the time, and the teller informed the customer that we cannot accept unrolled coin, so he ended up selling to another bank in town who I know the manger of, and of course she kept them all for herself!
We usually dont make a habbit of sending money in simply because it is old, but really only if it is mutalated or taped together.

it always of course depends on how you approach your teller, don't go during busy hours such as lunch breaks etc. and check policy first, it is sad what the economy has done when a lot of people have to use their special money at face value to actually buy food for their families. Happens all the time
