Victor, will know for sure. He is the resident expert on all coins dealing with Constantine and family. Hopefully he will be along and check it out.

Thanks for the additional info, I'll wait to see what Victor says.

In my searches on the internet, I did come across a few of these coins, and the "VOTIS" in the box of the re was a bit different. Here it is "VOT" then "IS" on the second line. The 2 examples I found had "VO" on the first and "TIS" on the second.

Is there a fake database somewhere here on this forum?

I sent Victor an e-mail so hopefully he will respond. We really don't have a data base for fakes here, but here are two or the best.

The VOT-IS and VO-TIS configurations are both known for this issue. Infact, the VO-TIS issue is listed as R4 (extremely rare) whilst this break (VOT-IS) is listed at C3 (common). If you're interested, the reference is RIC VII Trier 305. Apparently issued in 321 ACE.

I agree with Echizento. There is some doubt about this coin. Victor will know for sure.

Why paint a patina on a genuine ancient coin? Should it not have a natural patina? Any fabrication should throw up red flags and sirens...no need to alter a genuine coin.

As we all know certain really good fake coins need actual visual inspection to be confirm as such. Pictures are only worth one thousand words.... So on one hand we have the weasel Saxby, a notorious seller of fakes, albeit usually ones over $100 are his style. The only evidence in favor is that this coin is common, and priced in the sub 100 range, which is usually not a hot ticket for most high volume high end dealers in fakes. Of course at tourist traps and places where $10 is the annual income of a person, then all bets are off and they will sell anything they can fake or not. It looks off to me, but if Victor or Sear said it was real I would accept it.

First one doesn't have any issues I can see. The second one, if fake, is a pretty darned good fake and definitely not a tourist piece. I've seen many that have that sort of patina and quality so those don't disqualify it. It is clearly not cast. The wear is odd and would cause me to pass though, even from another source, and especially from a person who is known to sell fakes (including very convincing fakes like this may be.)

On the balance I would say that I don't think the coin is fake, thoigh the patina is more likely to be, but I wouldn't be confident enough that it is real to buy it from an unknown source, let alone saxby.
