Some interesting tidbits of information regarding 1938 â€" 1959 nickels of which I was not aware.
The average number of nickels minted for each year and each mint is 58 million during this period.
The distribution is
34% 2.6 million to 59.9 million minted 13% 60.0 â€" 99.9 million minted 53% 100 â€" 271 million minted
By mint, the mintage is:
53% P 34% D 13% S
I have gone through the equivalent of 116 boxes of nickels (some bags, partial boxes - 30 rolls and up, and full boxes). My results regarding the above statistics are:
29% 2.6 million to 59.9 million minted 18% 60.0 â€" 99.9 million minted 53% 100 â€" 271 million minted
Looks like the lower minted coins are being kept out of circulation.
52.1% P 42.4% D 5.5% S
Obviously, I live in the East.
Some other statistics.
61% of the time I find at least 1 silver nickel with the average being 1.7 34% of the time I find at least 1 buffalo with the average being 1.4
If I find at least 1 buffalo, 61 % of the time I will find a silver nickel.
