The shield indentation and what appears to be an image of the shield in the field of the coin is not a clash as the seller indicates.

A clash of the dies would result in an impression of the OTHER die on the shield side not the same die. So that is not what happened.

If I had to guess a second coin was placed on top of this one face to face and it was pressed or hammered into the first. I would bet it is simple post-strike damage on an otherwise common coin.

Thanks swamperbob,

it seems the shield not mess with the wing and head of the eagle? when you look the line till reach wing it seems normal, or maybe before die the shield was present, second thought.

Double struck coins sometimes flip in the process so don't count that possibility out.

If your coin is a "discovery" piece (mint mark, etc.) you are going to HAVE to get it documented/authenticated.
Of course that means submitting it to a TPG.
If you do that call them first and find out what the process is for such a procedure.

kanga I agree a coin could flip and be double struck that happens all the time - however in that case where is the die edge?

The second strike would have to be partially out of collar and the collar die would have to damage the rim of the fully struck coin. This would be visible whether you postulate the damage as a first or second impact. The shield is a recessed feature on the die and for the second strike to leave traces in the field would necessitate a serious impact with the collar on one or both sides. Since there is no trace of the collar even leaving a tiny mark - I would eliminate the theory as impossible.

As to how it happened post-strike anything is impossible especially if it was done intentionally.

Guys,

Here, you see the arrow pointed to the anomaly straight line to shoulder of the eagle without messing the wing and head.if this hammer job it will left the mark on wing and head of the eagle. Just a thought.
