Ebayer advertizes a proof set in OGP.

then you look at it and notice it isn't quit OGP..

I really hate this kind of scam.

(for those who don't notice, the plastic is NOT from 1954)

Yeah, they're trying to take advantage of beginning collectors or someone who's not smart enough to realize that those plastic flips aren't from the 50's

The coins in the 1954 proof sets came in the brittle plastic, not the soft stuff you see there. If I'm not mistaken, the switch over to the softer stuff came during the 1955 year.

also, the coins were heat sealed on the ends.. so you would see a crinkle on the end of each bag.
Also, plastic from a set that old with the type of plastic they used would have aged.

And you can see the bag with the nickle in it has had a staple removed.

So, do you think this is a made up proof set or not a proof set at all ?

How much of a premium does original packing command over a re-constituted set ?

Pertinax, It is entirely possible the coins are proof coins. Couldn't tell without them in hand, to determine if they are proof or not.

OGP in the older sets do command a premium. The benefit of OGP is that you can be pretty sure they are all untouched.

as far as what it is worth...

My 1953 OGP set is worth more then a put together set...you would have to do some ebay research for completed sales.

I bought my OGP set for $170.00, while a big time coin shop was selling a put together one for $220.00.

This is definitely the original cardboard box and the coins appear to be nice proof coins. What appears to have happened is the coins are not in their original cello wrappers as issued by the mint. Entirely likely that the coins were put in plastic and heat sealed. The original cello could have cracked or become yellowed. The guy has good feedback and does not appear to be an ebay problem. Should maybe have listed them a bit more accurately.

I chatted with this seller not too long ago about an 1895-O Morgan he had listed. This one as well as his other Morgans were in decent shape but buffed to the point they were completely ruined. He told me he picked up an estate. He had them listed as cleaned, which is partially true, but not really accurate. Anyone knowledgeable would immediately recognize the issues from the pictures, but it would be much better for him to be more up front in the descriptions. I wouldn't feel right listing this way. I usually deprecate my coins in my description. One of recent descriptions for a large cent was "It's round, it's copper, it's genuine, and it's cheap. Can't think of anything else nice about it"

I'm thinking the mouse that chewed the box open also compromised the original cello packaging.
