if you will send the picture to Edited to remove email address since the picture has been already sent I will upload the pictures for you, it is impossible to say if the coin is a fake without seeing pictures

You could also just add your picture to a photobucket.com account and include the link. Make sure your picture is as big as possible.

What is the date on it? Is there a mint mark? If so, it will be a single letter, on the back just above "ONE DOL." This is a very commonly counterfeited coin, and many times the date and mint mark are completely wrong for the coin, which is why I ask.

that is true, that is a way to tell if its fake or not, if the date is a year that that specific type wasn't even really minted at the US Mint then its a fantasy piece. I wasn't even thinking about that aspect of the coins coming from China

Tiesto,
Do you have access to a digital scale? Weigh the coin. Most but not all counterfeits come up light. The correct weight at minting was 26.73 grams. The coin could lose up to 1 gram for wear, but a coin weighing in at 22 or 23 grams is definitely a counterfeit. Keep us posted.

Oh, sorry.

If it is an 1871 dollar and it weighs 19 grams, then it is definitely a fake made with a base metal (not silver)

Tiesto: Not a good idea to post your e-mail address in an on-line forum.

I am so sorry, I just checked my email for the first time in a few days and see that he has sent me the pictures I asked him to send so I could upload them for him Even without looking at the date you can see the granular surfaces of the coin which is a dead giveaway for a cast copy, hopefully these pictures will help people identify these type of copies when they see them because I know we don't see allot of them being posted on the site to keep it fresh in everyones minds what they really look like

The 1871 pictured is also missing the "IN GOD WE TRUST" motto above the eagle, another clear indication that it is fake. Motto was added in 1866.
