I bought this as part of a "lot" of 3 large sized ancient coins. The other 2 were uncleanes. This one obviously is. I've searched the web, but no idea. It's just a couple mm smaller than a Franklin half. I don't know the weight. Bronze I believe - it's not magnetic.

Any idea?

Thanks.

Not a lot of detail to go by. The coin appears to be a Roman provincial. The bust looks like it might be Caracalla or Macrinius. That's about the best I can do with what's visible.

The bust is quite scowly - that would make me think Elagabalus or Caracalla. I'm leaning towards Elagabalus. Its a provincial issue.

Notice there's something like a whip or rope hanging from the right hand of whoever's on the reverse? Don't know if that helps. The left hand appears to be holding a staff or something.

Any idea why there's an indentation in the center on both sides?

The reverse figure could be practically anyone. They minted a lot of variety out in the provinces.

The indentations are supposedly due to the method used to prepare the flans. They werent on the die.

The dimple in the center tells us that this is a provincial. It's unsure what it's true purpose was but it has been said the the flan was lathe turned to make it round. Another theory was that it was a centering hole when the coin was struck.

Seems some of the legend should be legible, but not clear enough for me.
