I do not know where else to post this. A few years ago at a late age I got interested in coin collecting. But, after moving from IN, to NM, then to AZ in the last 3 years this has been put on the back shelf. I am collecting the Mint coin sets for both my son and grand daughter. A bit behind. Can anyone tell me why this particular set is now around the $70 mark? Makes me happy that I can see some sets may actually be worth money down the line when I pass these on. Just sad I didn't buy it fresh from the mint. Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but if anyone can school me I'd appreciate it.

They were available from the mint for a VERY short time. For some reason (which someone else might be more knowledgeable than me as to why) they pulled them before many were sold. That is why they cost more than the others. I too wish I could have bought many from the mint before they pulled it. I would be rich! This might be better placed in the modern coin section.

These, along with the silver and non silver proof set were sold by the mint, much as they had been for previous years, and as in previous years, people dragged their feet buying these because they seem to be on the bottom of everyone's "to buy" list. These are quite often carried over into the following year and sometimes into the year after. So people always buy the "limited time" sets first and drag their feet on these. Well in the fall of 2012, the mint for unknown reasons, halted sales. Maybe to get people to stop waiting in future years, maybe to spur sales of subscriptions, maybe to purposely keep mintage low to make a key date, no one knows. But it did leave a lot of people who have on going sets in the lurch. To keep their sets complete. And it created the lowest mintage of any set since 1962. The prices will probably come down in the future, but at 392,000 sets and many people collecting these sets and cracking these sets to keep their Dansco ' current, they probably won't drop much.

Same thing happened in 1986 and for awhile the 1986 sets were sky high. The 86 set was promoted as the lowest mintage since 1964, and it stayed the lowest until the 1995 set. Today it is considered to be just another common set.

Put it on your backburner, prices will drop in time.

As echoed above, patience will be your friend for theses sets. They tend to drop like a rock over time. I've recently seen the 2012 sets going for as little as $27 up to the $70 high end. The 2008 sets go for similar price range. I picked up a couple of sets for $15 each a couple of months ago.

Thanks to you all for the helpful information. I'll make sure to buy as soon as they come out from now on since I'm back on track. And will wait until I can find the 2012 cheaper later on. I appreciate all of your replies!

As of today, the 2012 set's title of "Lowest Mint Set since 1962" has been taken over by the 2013 set (which is 16K set lower than the 2012). The price for 2013 set is still low so you may want to get it how if you haven't done so.
The mintage trend for US Mint Set has been down in the last few years.

I believe the price is artificially high. Something similar happened with the 1999 silver proof set. While it is still a bit high, it was MUCH higher at one time. Luckily, I got my set from the mint, and even more, sold it at the peak of it's value... which almost never happens for me. It was one of the few wins this collector (non-investor) has ever seen.
Give it some time. It'll level off, probably just a few bux over other sets.
