After consulting J and M coins, Coins and Canada, Canadian Coins and Currency and one of those there dark age books I have to wonder why NB coins are so pricey.

Well, not pricey but pricey compared to NFLD coins.

A lot of NB coins have had a greater mintage number and from what I can tell are a lot less desirable in Canada, not to mention never talked about outside our country.

With the lower mintages and greater desirability and longer run of Newfy coins why are NB coins so pricey in comparison? Were a bunch of them destroyed or lost over the years? Are higher grades pretty much non-existent?

Thanks.

i don't know maybe because there are roughly 200 more thousand people in newbrunswick... it is interesting how this works eh! I mean there is a whole section of newfie coins on the coins and canada website. there are fewer years of the new brunswick coinage meaning there years and not there mintages.

Harmonica, are you talking in general about NB COINS?
or about silver only? or about certain grades or denominations?

Not the frigate tokens but the '61-'64 semi-regal coins.
Silver is nuts and the Half Cent is more so.

I wouldn't think population has to much to do with it VancouverIslandCoinKid, New Brunswick isn't rally a place where people go out of their way for history and collecting, we are more "salt to the Earth" then some places.

Do you subscribe to Canadian Coin News?
all prices are there. But be careful and use it as a guide only.
If you have any Charlton coin book, the mintages are listed there.
You can easy see the scarcity of some.

True, but NFLD coins were minted for many more years so the totality of NFLD coins is much greater. There isn't much difference between doing a type set of NB coins and doing a full set whereas there is a big difference for NFLD coins. Also, survival rates would be lower for the older NB coins than the more 'modern' NFLD coins. Lastly I would suspect that there was more interest in NFLD in preserving their currency as a symbol of their distinctiveness from Canada which would contribute to higher survival rates but that's just a guess.
