I find considerable 'wishful thinking' (myself included) when it comes
to low and mid grade coins and tokens. Wear and possible damage distorts
sufficient evidence to render the findings inconclusive.

Doug, inconclusive ok, but possible.
just like with the 1872 25 cent piece (not 50 cent which is known for a while) . a few do exist.
I know of a person who has 2.
the 25 cent was not known until a couple of years ago.
so why not others?
I believe it is also known on the 1880 25 cent.. may be wrong.

True, Interesting variations exist and can be readily found on higher grade coins.
On mid and lower grade coins, compelling evidence oftentimes has been long worn away.
