I got 4 nickel (around 1986) wich have a blue to light Brown finish. Is it due to atmospherical contamination?
Rest in Peace

Nickel does tone. Not entirely sure how it does (i.e., what kind of chemical reaction takes place and what the resulting product is), but they do tone. Could be toning...but pics would be nice.

i have done some experiments with these coins, and it is not from heat. It could most likely be from atmosphere weathering or what have you. or from a chemical reaction. sometimes it is just from a high grade lustre.

I do a lot of metal detecting and usually find a few hundred or so coins made of nickel per year. In sand they don't seem to tone much, however in dirt and soil you get some beautiful toned nickel coins. I probably have 300 or so in different denominations in my toned collection. From half moon tones to bright purple and some with every color under the sun on them. That collection is my prized one due to the great eye appeal they offer.

I've found nickel coins in clay and it really varies as to what happens to it, be it the coin being eaten by the acidic value of the clay or the odd time you get a nice toned one, but not often. Same as in the water, dependent on the acidic value of it, either get eaten coins or toned.

Would love to see pics of them.

I don't like coins toned in colors; I'm "old school" and prefer blast white (unc coins) or gray for old or circulated coins.
But for me nickels (particularly Jeffersons) are an exception.
The light colors (pastels) I find very appealing.

I tried on Google to find the cause of toning on nickel coin but no luck.
So I can only suspect it's because of the copper that is part of the alloy.

yes well brought up point in regard to the copper Kanga, because you can nicely tone copper using heat if you execute it the right way.

Sorry if I'm late, I catch the flux and stay in my bed.
I took a picture. Coins are BU but with the picture, it's look like more a stain but in hands, it's look a bit different. I took the picture in angle to see more the reflect wich can't be achieve beeing over it.
