Oh that is very nice Celtic. I'm usually on a phone when I'm on this site, so I don't see avatars all that well.

As far as my large cents, I am also partial to my avatar. An 1855 slated 5s I recently acquired from OcalaFlorida:

I'm going to have to find one of the braided hair 39s. I think they call them "head of 1840"?

They seem to be less expensive than the knob on ear and the 57, but more expensive than common dates.

They're sort of difficult to come by. Lot of nasty looking ones on ebay, and very few problem free if any.

Really nice collection of copper Scottk!
I have focused my efforts on US copper before 1840 but your collection makes me want to get some more of those late dates in my collection.

The 55 Knob on ear is actually a very common variety but has the problem in that it comes in many different distinct die states as the knob forms and progresses. There are many people who collect that variety by die state meaning that each collector ties up a dozen or more specimens, plus duplicates. I have seen collections with 19 or more different die states.

That 1855 / avatar is great looking. Almost looks like some famous painter just painted it into existence with some crazy copper ink.

Wheatchaser didn't draw that one for you did he?

Hi Buckeye. No, OcalaFlorida did it with computer animation.

P.S....

I like these later date (braided hair) cents, because they're the easiest early coppers to find in nice condition for reasonable prices. Here's my latest acquisition. Try finding a Draped Bust cent in this shape for $45.

:)

That last 1855 is amazing!

For a series of cents, and without mint marks to worry with,
there sure seems to be a lot to collecting these.

I have one of these coins, and I probably paid WAY too much
money for it, but I wanted something nice looking for my 7070.
I'll have to get a pic of it and have some of you large cent
guys tell me if I paid too much for it, and what variety it is.

We might be able to help with a value but don't hold your breath on getting a variety identification from a photo unless it has some distinctive feature.

I would like to see it Ratio...

btw, that 1855 is a computer animation, not a real coin.
