I decided to make braided hair large cents the first date set I will try to put together. I've been collecting less than a year, and I fell in love with these coins. Some of these would fall into fine grade, but I'm mostly trying to keep the set vf and up. I will probably continuously upgrade over time, because as of yet, I see no reason to stop even after I get all the dates.

Wow Scott. Those are some cool coins. Do you know the Newcomb numbers on any of these? I highly recommend "United States Copper Cents, 1816-1857" by Howard Rounds Newcomb and George H. Clapp. It is the definitive book on late large cents. Another excellent book is "The Die Varieties Of United States Large Cents, 1840-1857" by J.R. Grellman. That book focuses on Braided Hairs specifically. Some times you will find Grellman attributed coins for sale on ebay. That's great provenance to go along with a great coin.

Thanks Celtic. I do know that the 1841 is an n-5 (die cracking through the date and in a circular pattern around the outside edge of the obverse), and the 1840 an n-1.

I do want to get those books..

I looked at a list of varieties a few weeks ago, and there are apparently 300+. I like that. That means this will be a looonnnggg journey.

Great start, but I have to warn you, it's a very difficult book set, with all the different varieties.

I wouldn't doubt it coinguy. I've also heard of people doing seperate complete date sets of different color tones. Lol.

Right now, I have my thoughts set on one of those 1855 slanted 5 knob on ear varieties.

Yeah, I think they look pretty wild when the little know turns a slightly different color from the rest of the coin for whatever reason.

Nice coins Scott. Yea, those large cents drive me crazy. I think that's what attracts me to them. I just bought my first 3, and have some others lined up in my sights. Thanks for the book recommendations Celticsoul.

the knob on ear 1855 and the 1857 are the pricey ones in the series in vf-xf shape. They are the only ones I have paid more than 35 bucks for. I think the knob cost me 60 and the 57 I got a good deal for at 125. My-Braided-Hair-Large-Cent-Set-Progress... My-Braided-Hair-Large-Cent-Set-Progress... My-Braided-Hair-Large-Cent-Set-Progress... I forgot about the 1849 with the rarer die variety that I paid 43 for. My-Braided-Hair-Large-Cent-Set-Progress... My-Braided-Hair-Large-Cent-Set-Progress...
