Does anyone have any information of the Hannes Tulving grading company? Are their holdered coins worth a premium?

Must be the numismatic arm of the now defunct precious metals dealer. I think I heard he sold numismatic coins back in the 1980's.

They are US coins. I'm looking an 1881 S Morgan. The holder seems old

The Tulving pieces dated from the late 1980's. I'm not sure if they did outside grading or if they were only used in the numismatic arm of Hannes Tulving as a method of presenting a custom slabbed type item that also preventing opening or switching of the coins. The Tulving slabing did not last long, but the company did. Of course the company is now out of business.

They are not really sealed slabs in the modern sense, the two halves are held together with a glued on paper label.

Conder describes them

Quote:
Instead the slab folds over the coin and the two halves snap together with four interlocking tabs placed around the coin window. The label folds over the fold in the slab. The front has the identification of the coin and the serial number on the left and the price Tulving is selling it for on the lower right. (It's both a slab and a sales holder!)

He also describes them as quite prevalent in the early 2000s when he wrote his book, but that the dot matrix printing is 1980s.

Even today you can still buy pin-feed dot matrix for label printing, but from the pricing I've seen I would say that they do date back to the 80s.

Additionally:

There are two up for sale on da bay right now

301487922894 - (Horrible pictures) 1887 Morgan (Holder says MS63, $147.40), current NumisMedia FMV in 63 is 60.

281569378333 - 1881S Morgan (Holder says MS62, $127), current FMV in 62 is $55 (up from $40 in 2010)

Not really... I might have paid $5 extra for my slab collection. They sell for a lot of money where the possibility of an upgrade looms especially at points where the next grade is worth a lot more.
