1906 British Maundy Set:  The origin of the Maundy Service go back to Christ washing His disciples' feet. In the Middle Ages, on Maundy Thursday (the day before Good Friday) the King would wash the feet of a number of poor, elderly people and distribute money to them. The number of people and the amount of money distributed would correspond to the number of years in the King's age (so, if the King was 50, 50 elderly people would each receive 50 silver pennies). From the reign of Charles II, special 1, 2, 3 and 4 pence coins were struck for the Maundy service, and the Maundy Set was born. The tradition continues to this day. In 1971, when Great Britain introduced decimal coinage, it was decided to re-value the coins from 1d, 2d, 3d and 4d to 1p, 2p, 3p and 4p - an increase of 240% in their face value! Maundy coins are still struck in 92.5% silver. Until the reign of the present Queen, the Maundy ceremony was always held at Westminster Abbey, but services are often now held in provincial cathedrals. |

Who would have guessed  That we are seeing some interesting coins for 1906. I like that Maundy set NumisRob, those sets have been on my list of coins to watch for. The gold from pepactonius ... nice... keep it coming. Funny almost had one of those this past week. A lady brought one into the coin shop to see what it was worth. Hers was a 1912 10 Corona. World coin guide list value, for 1912 as BV (bullion value) .09xx AGW would have been low $100's ... but she didn't sell.... yet ... ===================== that half Won from Bungle ... will be watching for a coin like that  Edited by GR58

Great Britain 1906 3 pence I like big silver coins, but many times I will pull these small 3 Pence coins .. and Canada five cents silvers out of the boxes. To me it seems coins like, these would have been lost often .. back when they circulated.   |
