I was looking around the perthmint website. I really like the coins as most of them are with colors. One thing I noticed was they're very low mintage, the lunar coins are about 5000 each. If its such low mintage shouldn't their value increase in time? Has anybody ordered a dancing man coin? I'm really tempted to order one but thought of hearing everyones opinion first. Thank you.

First welcome to Australian coins In answer to your question about the dancing man coin. There are different schools of thought on it. Fo example I don not normally collect coins that have been coloured. So although this coin looks good I would rather have the Unc or circulated version - It is a personal choice. For more information you may want to join the aussie coin forum found at http://www.aussiecoins.net/forum/What Australian Coins are you collecting? Please post any questions you may have here we will be happy to get answeres for you. Just remember coins are collected for losts of reasons, beauty, value, investment, you also have to decide not only which coins you will collect but Why Happy collecting

At the moment I don't have any Australian coins but I really liked the AU lunar series, sovereigns etc. I think I would like to start a collection for investment purposes as well as another for the beauty of it.

Hello Shatsi... We only have two operating Mints here downunder, one is the Perth Mint (PM) and the other is the Royal Australian Mint (RAM).As a general rule of thumb, you will find PM concentrates in the minting of NCLTs as well as bullion coins for local consumption as well as under license from other Countries eg Cook Islands, Tuvalu etc.. Contary to the belief PM issues should appreciate in time with their very low mintages, the reverse is the case. There are very few decimal NCLTs from PM that have retained their issue prices. If you are collecting with a slant towards investment, then my advise is steer clear of the decimal NCLTs and only look at the Gold Sovereigns. If you are collecting for the sheer joy of owning very well made coins and the beauty of those coins, where capital appreciation is secondary, then yes....the Lunars, the Kookas are coins that you can pick up quite cheaply for your collection.

Thank you lim. Is it true that on the sovereigns only the proof or the Unscirculated coins gain value?

IMHO,collecting of at least UNC or better grades is the way to go.Proof condition is even better but most of the proof condition ones (true FDC)are now beyond the reach of mere mortals...

Since you do not have the reference books yet I would refer you to my website www.aussie-coins.com where on the links page I have the inventory software for both mints, you can look at issue price and at current price. You will see that many coins GAIN VALUE but not all at investors rates. I have some gold coins lunar that are 6 years old and have no more value today than when they were issued.

My apologies I did the Perth Mint half and a very well educated coin person who also owns a shop did the RAM side . I did not realize the prices were not there - there is a reason. The reason for this is there is no "issue price" But if you post or email me with any specific coin I will look it up for you. I can give you the value by year and "Australian Grade" Sorry I don't use the Us 70 point system. If you do decide to collect Australian coins You will want to buy a copyy of McDonalds or Rennick books, (I have both) see descriptions on my site under references.
